Mermaid Vibes Only
Make stylish waves with the trend that dives deep into ocean glamour
Straight from the beach and into the streets, it’s the trend fashion aficionados say will make the biggest splash this summer. Call it mermaid chic or mermaidcore, one thing’s for sure: this look has legs!
For ocean lovers like us, the mermaid aesthetic is something that’s already has a presence in our everyday style. Aqua blues, ruffle tops, long flutter skirts, pearl pendants—bring ‘em on! But for the rest of the world, mermaidcore rose to the surface with the release of The Little Mermaid trailer this past fall. Since then, TikTok has reported that mermaidcore has amassed a staggering 14.8 billion—yes, billion—views on the app.
True, fashion trends ebb and flow like the ocean’s tide, but it seems that elements of mermaidcore have been with us for nearly 100 years. The quintessential mermaid silhouette is thought to have been created by French couturier Marcel Rochas in the 1930s and anchored itself to the fashion scene by Jean Patou, whose aquatic-inspired gown appeared in a 1933 issue of Vogue. Since then, the siren style has taken on many incarnations but re-entered the mainstream in 2021 when Versace and Burberry made waves with their novelty nautical designs. Cut to spring 2023, and Blumarine, Erdem, Victoria Beckham, and many other luxury designers decided to take the plunge.
And Disney's animated masterpiece The Little Mermaid (based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale published in 1837) made Ariel part of our world in 1989 by introducing the voiceless daughter of King Triton with flowing red tresses, a purple seashell top, and a shimmering green tail.
Clearly, sartorial seekers looking to channel their inner mermaid have a vast pool to pull from. Including our Seashore Dreams collection. Enchanting with ocean-inspired treasures that celebrate the beauty of life beneath the water, it’s everything a mermaid would love to have in her jewelry box. Spanning simple and sleek to elaborate and chic, each piece gives you a glimpse of the grandeur of an underwater garden.
Now if you’re new to mermaidcore and are eager to dive in, these sea-sational accessories are the ideal jumping off point. But first you need to ask yourself, “What type of mermaid am I?” Well, that depends on how big of a splash you want to make. Let our guide help you find your answer:
